Self-care: connecting to the true self
What does it mean?
When you think of self-care, you might think it may be about doing something that you're supposed to do, because society said it helps. Maybe its the trending diet or workout program. Rice water for hair?
Rather than asking, "Is this what I am supposed to be doing?" ask the question "Do I love this?" and "Does this help me re-connect to my true self?"
Doing activities in the name of self-care should not only help us become better versions of ourselves, but the version we were always meant to be. True self-care leads to improved functioning in any aspect of our lives whether it's feeling happier, more energetic, better at critical thinking, or better at being emotionally present with a loved one. We are truly watering "the plant" and watching it grow, healthy and strong.
Whether it's doing a daily jog or affirmations in the morning, ask yourself, "Am I present in this experience?" and "Does this feel right for me?"
When we check-in with ourselves, we are attuning to the experience. We can then make the intentional decision to either continue or discontinue the activity if it feels inauthentic for us.
